A medallion is one of the simplest ways to make an outdoor space feel custom. A compass rose at the top of the steps down to the water, or a star at the center of a pool deck, gives the eye somewhere to land and ties the whole layout together.
Getting one right starts with layout, not the medallion itself. We find the true center of the space and decide how the surrounding stone will meet the medallion's edge. For octagonal or round landings, that means radial cuts and borders that frame the piece evenly on every side.
Next is the dry layout. The medallion and the first rings of field stone are laid out without mortar, with spacers in every joint, so we can check alignment and spacing before anything is permanent. Compass medallions are usually oriented to true north, or to line up with the dock, the pool or the house.
Once everything lines up, the medallion is set first on a full bed, then the field stone is set outward from it. Joints are finished to match, and the stone is cleaned and sealed to protect the colors in the inlay.
Medallions work in travertine, marble and porcelain, inside or out. If you'd like one for a foyer, landing or pool deck, we can help you choose a design during your free estimate.
