Travertine vs. Concrete Pool Decks: What Holds Up Best in Florida

Most Tampa Bay pools start with a concrete deck because it's the cheapest option at build time. A few summers later, homeowners notice the problems: the surface is too hot to walk on at midday, hairline cracks spread from the corners, and stains from leaves and sunscreen won't scrub out.

Travertine solves most of that. It's a natural stone with a porous structure that stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete, and its slightly textured surface gives better grip when wet. Because travertine pavers are individual pieces, small slab movement doesn't turn into long cracks across the deck.

Repairs are simpler too. If one paver is damaged, it can be lifted and replaced instead of cutting and patching a section of concrete that never quite matches. Over twenty or thirty years, that matters.

The key is installation. Travertine pavers need a compacted base, proper slope away from the pool and the house, and edge restraints so the field stays tight. Laid over existing concrete, they need the right bonding method. Sealing is optional but helps keep color and resist stains.
